  • AT/2024/0308 Granted

Glenroy Parkhill Road Torquay TQ1 2DT

T1. English oak, Quercus robur. T1 is growing in the garden of Glenroy as shown on map. It has been in bad health for a number of years now shedding leaves early, and signs of crown thinning, despite a hard reduction a few years ago. This year has put out fruiting bodies for Meripilus Giganteus. these can be seen it pictures although they have turned black. there is also severe decay in the stem of the tree from ground level to about 2 metres. this cavity creating a weak point in the tree making it likely to fail. this can also be seen in pictures. I propose to dismantle T1 to ground level and re plant another quercus robur in another area of the garden in order to avoid it getting infected with the existing Meripilus Giganteus.

Part of G5 Preservation Group - 1 x Hawthorn (identified in Tree Survey Document as T4824) - fell to ground level. Reason: Basal failure onto parked car due to decay and crown dieback. T001 2006.014 - Cedar (identified in Tree Survey Document as T4827) - reduce limb by 40% to reduce stress at fracture point. Reason: Hazard beam axial fracture visible with decay beneath bark- likely due to an historic high-sided vehicle strike. Low end-weight relative to girth at union suggests low likelihood of failure. Lowest limb failure onto parked car considered. T603 Norway Maple (identified in Tree Survey Document as T4829) - fell to ground level. Reason: Ivy-clad base and unions into lower crown. Crown dieback to approximately 50%, but 100% on southern side. Internal decay detected by hammer acoustic test. Poor unions ? included bark. Limb failure into road considered.

Pine (T1) - fell due to its significant lean toward the dwellings situated to the southeast. Additionally, the lower portion of the stem obstructs access to the electric gate control box, which impedes maintenance and emergency access. Following the mechanical grinding of the stump, it is recommended that the area be replanted with Turkish Hazel or species from the genus Sorbus. T1 is located within a restricted area that is surrounded by tarmac.

Holm Oak (T1) & (T2) - A reduction by 2 metres in the lower and mid part of the crown on the southern aspect with the maximum diameter of pruning cuts not exceeding 50 mm to minimise heartwood exposure and ensure that the reduction is proportional to the tree's original form. Cyclical management should be conducted every five years, as these processes are not widely visible to the public. The specified reduction will maintain a healthy leaf-bearing structure, providing the remaining framework can generate adequate leaf cover in the next growing season. Work will result in a natural and symmetrical appearance without solely focusing on aesthetic symmetry, ensuring biomechanical stability. Clare Lodge's garden is tiny and lacks sufficient light for the little plants. The encroaching crowns of trees T1 and T2 make the garden less enjoyable.

1 x Holm Oak which is situated on the northern aspect of number 9 Pilmuir Avenue. Re-pollard to previous pollard points at approximately 6 metres above ground level. All arising material shall be removed from site and returned to our premises for recycling. Justification: 1. Cyclical Maintenance: As stated in BS3998 (Section 7.10)., once pollarding is initiated, it should be maintained by cutting new branches on a regular cycle. The frequency of re-pollarding depends on factors like species and site management. This tree's new growth is around 4 metres long therefore in line with the management objectives of the site we are proposing to re-pollard, to manage its size and maintain the intended structure at 6 metres above ground level. 2. Selective Cutting to Avoid Decay: BS3998 emphasises that during each cycle of pollarding, selective pruning is necessary to maintain some live branch material. To achieve this we will not be cutting back past knuckles but to just above to retain some functional material to establish new growth and prevent the spread of long term decay. Summary: The pollarding will reduce the trees overall height from 10 metres to 6 metres above ground level by removing the new growth of 4 metres to the previous pollard points. These sections provide a solid basis for re-pollarding the tree in line with recommendations set out within BS3998, ensuring the health and structural integrity of the Holm Oak in the short to long-term.

Reduce crown from south by 1m to leave a tree of with crown spread 7m to south. Reduce crown from west by 3m to leave a tree of with crown spread 4m to west.
