Queensgate, Butts Way, Aston Rowant

Mature Beech 18m tall, 900mm trunk diameter at 1.5m above ground level. The tree has been suppresed with the significant mass of the canopy toward the road. There is a ganoderma bracket developing between 2 buttress roots on the southern side of the tree. Appraisal: The tree appears to be responding to the loss of its neighbour by producing adventitious growth on the Northern side. It does have a pathogenic fungus, probably a Ganoderma species, growing between the buttress roots and this will gradually develop. The tree will have been exposed to wind forces significantly more than it has adapted to as a result of the removal of the adjacent tree. The fungus may have vectored into the lower section of the tree as a result of excessive movement in the winter storms. Given the significant weight bias of the tree, I would envisage the tree failing within 20 years. Pruning to alleviate the bias towards the road and mitigate the stresses at the base of the tree would exacerbate the fungal activity and thus is not really a viable solution. Mature Sycamore 18m tall, 800mm trunk diameter at 1.5m above ground level. Historic damage with associated decay at base of tree (See pic 3). Canopy has been supressed with the signficant mass of the canopy toward the adjacent dwelling. Decay pockets on main stem at 2m, 3m and 3.5m above ground level. Appraisal: The sycamore was the subordinate tree in the original group of three. It has a very suppressed crown. It is responding to the loss of its neighbour by producing adventitious growth on the northern side. The decay pocket at 2m extends at least 300mm into the main stem. It is likely the other 2 at 3m and 3.5m extend a similar distance into the stem. This is fairly common in mature sycamores and catastrophic failure at this type of decay point is the eventual outcome. Recommendations: T1 & T2 have structural issues that are not easily mitigated by pruning. There is ample space to plant replacement trees on the section, thereby maintaining tree cover. I would suggest replacing with 2-3 native beech and removing the two trees, T1 and T2 within 3 years.

Speedwell, Wallingford Road, North Moreton, Oxon, OX11 9BA

T1 - Conifer T2 - Weeping Willow T1 - Conifer on frontage. Roots are starting to lift drive and tree is starting to grow through BT wires. To fell tree in sections to near ground level. Harpsden Rectory, 2 Harpsden Way, HENLEY-ON-THAMES, Oxon, RG9 1NL

Hornbeam x 9 - reduce crown height by approx 2m to significantly reduce the threat of failure and to maximise natural light. I wish to gain council approval to carry out a crown reduction on 9 Hornbeam trees. The trees were planted as a hedge, but have been left to form into mature trees. There are a number of cavities (highlighted in pics) and tight buttresses with included bark evident. They stand around 11 metres with minor deadwood evident, otherwise showing normal vigour. My client considers them to have a high amenity value and wants them managed. By reducing the height of the crowns this will reduce the threat of failure and increase natural light throughout the garden. All cuts will leave sufficient live growth and where necessary target pruned.

Greenacre, Uxmore Road, Checkendon, RG8 0SX

Beech - on boundary of the new houe named Hazelshaw, between Greenacre and Swallowcliffe. The beech tree is near the boundary to Swallowcliffe, approximately 20 yards from the highway. Crown reducation and crown clean. The tree is approximately 20m tall. The extent of its canopy is approximately North 6m, South 8m, East 8m, West 8m. A crown reduction of 25% is suggested, making the new tree dimensions 15m high with canopy dimensions North 4m, South 6m East 6m West 6m. Crown clean to remove any dead, damaged, weak or crossing branches. A crown reduction of approximately 20% is requested, making the new tree dimensions: 16m high with canopy dimensions North 4.5m, South 7.5m, East 6m, West 6m.Crown clean to remove any dead, damaged, weak or crossing branches. Chigwell Cottage, Croft Road, Goring

The trees T1, T2, T6 and T7 are four Lime Trees planted on the boundary of 1 Holmlea Road. The proposed work is identified by Barrell Tree Consultancy in a report drafted to support planning application P13/S1662/FUL. Please see attached extract. However as I have not yet discharged all pre-commencement conditions, I am using this form to seek authority for this work. Four Lime Trees T1, T2, T6, T7 remove deadweood from canopy (reason - safety) and remove epicormic growth up to 4m above ground level (to avoid shoots becoming dominant and excessively shading the garden).
