Mill Hill Lodge Mill Hill Road Barnes

Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum): Crown reduce by 2-3m Finished height 12-13m, finished spread 9-10m. The specimen is a mature Horse Chestnut currently exceeding its appropriate managed dimensions relative to its position within the garden and proximity to adjacent structures and boundaries. Crown reduction of 2-3m is proposed to reduce end-weight loading on primary limbs, lower the centre of gravity, and mitigate the risk of limb failure during high wind events, a recognised vulnerability in mature Horse Chestnut due to the species' susceptibility to bleeding canker (Phytophthora) and structural weakening from Guignardia leaf blotch, both of which can compromise wood integrity over time. Crown thinning of 20% is recommended to improve light penetration and air circulation through the canopy, reducing humidity within the crown that can otherwise encourage fungal pathogens and prolong leaf-wetness periods associated with foliar disease. This also reduces sail effect and wind resistance, further lowering the risk of storm damage. Removal of dead, rubbing, and crossing branches is standard arboricultural best practice, eliminating points of future decay ingress and reducing the likelihood of included bark and structural failure at crossing points. All works are proportionate, do not exceed recommended maximums for a single routine reduction cycle, and are in accordance with BS3998:2010 (Tree Work – Recommendations). The proposed works will not adversely affect the long-term health, form, or amenity value of the tree, and the specimen will be retained as a positive contributor to visual amenity following completion.

Silver Birch in Driveway, 23 Woodlands Road, london SW13 0JZ Having consulted two tree surgeons (Mark Spriggs and Jo Buckingham ( HTS Hardy Tree Surgeons)) I am applying for permission to remove the silver birch in the driveway, as well as the nearby holly tree. The Silver Birch (which was already mature when we purchased the property in 2000)., is approaching end of life, lost its crown in a storm approx 15 years ago and has shed additional limbs, one of which is curently hanging, held in place by dead climbing rose. The two leaders and side limbs are in danger of falling due to further decay evident in the trunk, and present a danger to the neighbour's garden (where young children play) as well as to users of the driveway, the propoerty's only access. Consideration has been given to weight reduction, but given the tree age and trunk condition this is not considered appropriate. We would be happy to leave the stump (and if desired some of the trunk left standing) in place so it can decay naturally over time to provide further habitat. Photographs of the tree, trunk and hanging branch are provided. The trees within the driveway are all self-seeded and have grown naturally, with consequent integrity. We do not think the narrow verge available, given also the lack of natural watering and need to keep the driveway trimmed back for access, is suitable for planting large trees, and if re-planting is required we would prefer to use suitable hedge species rather than replace like for like. Within the wider context of the garden we have in the past 20 years planted silver birch (two survive) and various cherries, gages and other trees. We have two large trees subject to TPO, (oak and sycamore) and do not believe it would be suitable to plant additional large trees - the garden already being well provided with trees and shrubs which support considerable wildlife. While work is undertaken on the birch we would also like to deal with the holly, which is in poor condition - one of the twin trunks is dead, while the other only supports a few side branches in poor condition. We woudl like permission to reduce this to a short standing trunk, to see if thereby we can encourage fresh growth from the base as part of the driveway hedge.

T1 Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica purpurea) Specification: Reduce the crown by approximately 2 metres in all aspects, taking all new growth back to the previous reduction points, leaving a finished height of approximately 8 metres and a finished radial spread of approximately 4.5 metres. Selectively thin the internal crown and remove major deadwood together with any crossing or rubbing branches. Justification: The proposed works form part of a cyclical management programme. The tree has previously been reduced and has since produced vigorous regrowth. Returning the crown to the previous reduction points will maintain an appropriate size and balanced crown form, reduce end weight on elongated branches, improve light penetration and airflow, and remove defective growth whilst preserving the tree's long-term health and amenity value in accordance with BS3998:2010. T2 & T3 Silver Birch (Betula pendula) Specification: Reduce the height of both trees by approximately 2 metres and reduce the radial spread by approximately 1–1.5 metres, leaving a finished height of approximately 7 metres and a finished radial spread of approximately 2.5 metres. Selectively thin the internal crowns and remove major deadwood from both trees. Justification:The proposed works form part of routine cyclical tree maintenance. The trees have become large for their location and the proposed reduction will maintain a balanced crown, reduce end weight on the branch structure and improve light penetration to the property and garden. Selective crown thinning will increase airflow through the canopy whilst the removal of major deadwood will improve the trees' structural condition and reduce the likelihood of branch failure. The works will retain the natural form, health and amenity value of both trees in accordance with BS3998:2010 – Tree Work – Recommendations.
