HGY/2026/1000 Refused
Eton Court, 6 Shepherds Hill, Hornsey, London, N6 5AF
Works to tree protected by a TPO. Sycamore - Crown reduce the height and spread 0.8m-1.0m past the previous reduction points (approx. 40%) height approx. 3.5m and spread approx. 3.0m Remove dead wood The tree is situated on unregistered/ownerless land adjacent to our residential block and is causing ongoing damage to essential drainage infrastructure. The root system has infiltrated the sewage pit serving the building and is interfering with the float mechanism of the sewage lifting pump. This has already resulted in operational issues, including the pump cutting out. In February 2026, a contractor removed a significant quantity of roots from the chamber and advised that further root ingress is likely due to the proximity and size of the tree. Continued root growth presents a risk of pump failure and potential sewage backflow, with associated health and property damage implications. The proposed 40% crown reduction is intended as a proportionate management measure to reduce the tree’s water demand and vigour, thereby helping to limit further root encroachment, while retaining the tree and its amenity value. 1. The Acer pseudoplatanus/ Sycamore tree, we are aiming at 4-5 meter crown reduction/thinning out dead wood crossing or rubbing branches to form a healthy aesthetically pleasing crown just reduced in overall size. 2. Fraxinus excelsior pollards to be reduced by 4-5 meters in height or back to old pollard points, again to form the healthiest example being reduced from high pollarded growth. 3. Prunus spp very small shrub tree in alley way to be reduced by 0.5 - 1.5 meters maximum as wobbling due to windy position and poor rooting (possibly root girdling) . 4. Sambucus nigra also in alley way wobbling so reduction of height again 0.5 - 1 meter maximum to reduce wobble from sail effect of windy position in alley way.

HGY/2026/0555 Granted
6 Acorn Terrace, Archway Road, Hornsey, London, N6 4BF
T1 mature Sycamore tree in the back garden. The total height of the tree is ~25 metres. As you can see from the side view photo, it sits between the buildings and the Highgate wood trees on the right. A wind tunnel effect is created between the buildings and the woods and, when full of leaf, our tree acts as a sail. There is a risk that it may be uprooted in strong windy weather. The proposal is to reduce the volume of the crown, so in practical terms this would be to reduce the height by around 2-3 metres but then to thin out the bulk of the branches, taking some back by half their length whilst leaving others intact. This would limit the impact of the wind and preserve the tree. An arborist will assess which particular branches will be shortened whilst he is working on the tree.
