Planning application

P26/S2525/TCA

Melbury House Fairmile Henley-on-Thames RG9 2LA

Decided South Oxfordshire Works to trees in CA

Proposal

T1 Horse Chestnut - Fell to ground level. Reason for Works – The tree has a large historic wound located at approximately 8 metres above ground level on the codominant stem that extends over the office building. Inspection of this wound has identified extensive associated decay. From approximately this point, there are also signs of significant bark delamination extending down the stem and through the main union to ground level. This is considered to represent a substantial structural defect that may compromise the long-term stability of the tree. In addition, the tree was crown reduced approximately five years ago, and the subsequent regrowth has been noticeably below what would typically be expected. This is considered indicative of declining crown vitality and reduced vigour. Given the extent of the structural defects, evidence of decay, reduced vitality, and the tree's close proximity to the office building, removal of the tree is considered to be the most appropriate and prudent management option in order to mitigate the risk of failure.

About trees applications

How this application type works

Tree applications cover work to protected trees: those under a tree preservation order need consent for pruning or felling, and trees in a conservation area need six weeks written notice before work starts. The council assesses the amenity value of the tree and can refuse consent, approve it with conditions, or in conservation areas make a preservation order in response.
