Works: Trees

Proposal
1 x Mature Ash 1 x Mature Ash (the tree is located in a rear courtyard and only accessible through a functioning restaurant, via conservatory glass doors. Construction and hard landscaping is considered detrimental to tree health and would not conform to BS5837 2012. On that basis it was decided to investigate the trees health. A basic visual tree assessment was carried out. The tree is located in a raised brick bed with hard landscaping in the centre Root Protection Area. This would appear to have been construction in the last 25 years. A basal decay issue was noted on the northern aspect. A root collar excavation revealed an element of active decay and subsequently a sonic tomograph PICUS test was commissioned following our recommendations. A PICUS test showed that structural integrity appeared satisfactory (details to follow) having been measured at 300mm above ground level. The basal defect will require monitoring. Inspection of the trees canopy and trunk revealed satisfactory to good vitality and a canopy reduction approx 10 years ago pruned back to historical pollard knuckles. The tree has extensive ivy infestation which obscured a full visual tree assessment. This has now been severed as whilst there are ecological benefits, the dominance of ivy upon the tree structure was considered excessive potentially able to hamper phototropic activity in the near future. Specifications and remedial recommendations: Part One: Whilst time consuming, it is important that the ivy is removed. This could be carried out by two qualified tree climbers who would strip the ivy by hand. This may take a day, or more. We will then be able to complete our visual tree assessment. We do not require planning (notice of intent) from SODC to carry out these works. Part Two: The tree would benefit from re-pruning back to, or just able, existing pollard knuckles which will assist the request for improved light into the conservatory of the restaurant below and also the duty of care with reference to diners being present below the canopy underneath the glass roof. This will require a notification of intent and an application is being sent today. Please note the tree shold have a duty of care survey every 12 months. Remarks:

T1 - Sycamore A large sycamore tree (T1 on the attached sketch plan) on this land has branches overhanging my garden land at the back of 23 Friday Street which causes excessive shading and die back of the grass below plus dead branch fall onto the garden below where my children play. I have met with assistant tree officer Joe Smith who has suggested that the removal of a secondary branch growing to the east back to the primary branch (i.e. the main overhanging branch) would be likely to be acceptable and I wish therefore to apply for permission to do this plus removal of dead branches overhanging my garden land. The owner has not responded to communications about my intention to make this application. Remarks:

T1: Birch: Twin stemmed Birch with a crown break a couple of feet above ground level. This tree has had cobra bracing installed and has previously had a crown reduction undertaken due to the applicants concerns over its safety with its close proximity to their own and neighbouring properties and the high volume of pedestrians who walk past the house particularly during the school pick up and drop off timings. The applicant wishes to reduce the height of the tree by 4 metres, to a point just above the previous pruning points and the lateral branches by up to 1 metre. T2, T3 and T4: Birch: Applicant wishes to carry out a 2m crown reduction of all 3 trees. These trees were planted by the applicant on the basis that they would be maintained as small trees owing to the size of space in this area of the garden and the proximity of buildings.

There are two trees in the front garden Permission is requested to fell both trees. Tree 1 = Weeping Birch Tree Tree 2 = Maple Tree Weeping Birch (Tree 1) This has become too large for the site, the roots are lifting the paving around it, making it a trip hazard. Roots have also entered the nearby drains, causing problems. Permission is sought to fell the tree, to make safe access to the property and to make space on the driveway for off street parking. (There is a nearby primary school, and parking can be a challenge.) Maple (Tree 2) This tree has also become too big for its location, which is very close to the boundary of No. 5 and No. 7 Vicarage Rd, causing lifting of the paving around it. It is also very close to both houses. Permission is sought to fell this tree.
