1 x Sycamore - adjacent to the boundary fence between 18 & 17 High Street. The tree in question is a large Sycamore situated adjacent to the boundary fence between 18 and 17 High Street, and towards the bottom of the gardens, furthest from the houses. These properties are in the Wallingford Conservation Area, and the rear gardens back onto an area of waste ground at the end of the small Thames Street car park opposite St Peter's Church. Please see attached sketch plan (not to scale) of the immediate area. I also attach photos showing the location and giving some idea of the height and spread of the tree. The tree is now very large and causes excessive shading to the gardens of both 17 and 18 High Street, being at least as high as the length of the gardens. The tree is easily identifiable as it is the only large Sycamore tree in either garden, and grows close to the fence between the gardens. There is currently some garden refurbishment under way in the garden of 18 High Street, near to the tree. I have consulted a local tree surgeon who recently carried out work on a tree in a nearby garden. His advice is to reduce the crown by 40% and I am therefore giving the required six weeks notice of my intention to carry out this work. Remarks:

T1 - Horse Chestnut This mature Horse Chestnut has significant areas of dead or discoloured bark particularly between buttress roots and reaction wood ribs, indicating internal decay. Multiple decay causing fungal fruiting bodies are present, possibly Rigidoporus ulmarius. Multiple bleeding canker lesions are present on the trunk and main stems in the crown. Major upper canopy limbs over 300mm in diameter have failed recently leaving large stubs. A number of upper canopy limbs have significant abrupt bends in them, with weight distribution and leverage lending them to be at increased risk of failure. There are also extensive growth cracks in said limbs which while only thought to be surface deep may imply vascular stess. The leaves are affected by leaf minor, and a turning brown and curling at this time, which removes some photosymthetic capacity, and hence ability to collect energy. There is a slight trunk lean and canopy asymmetry to the south, which increase the risk to the neighbouring properties. Recommendations: Fell as soon as practical to arrange (after planning consenthas been received) before full sized leaves return in the spring (largest sail area). Remarks:

La Bodega, 38 Hart Street, Henley on Thames, Oxon, RG9 2AU
1 x Mature Ash 1 x Mature Ash (the tree is located in a rear courtyard and only accessible through a functioning restaurant, via conservatory glass doors. Construction and hard landscaping is considered detrimental to tree health and would not conform to BS5837 2012. On that basis it was decided to investigate the trees health. A basic visual tree assessment was carried out. The tree is located in a raised brick bed with hard landscaping in the centre Root Protection Area. This would appear to have been construction in the last 25 years. A basal decay issue was noted on the northern aspect. A root collar excavation revealed an element of active decay and subsequently a sonic tomograph PICUS test was commissioned following our recommendations. A PICUS test showed that structural integrity appeared satisfactory (details to follow) having been measured at 300mm above ground level. The basal defect will require monitoring. Inspection of the trees canopy and trunk revealed satisfactory to good vitality and a canopy reduction approx 10 years ago pruned back to historical pollard knuckles. The tree has extensive ivy infestation which obscured a full visual tree assessment. This has now been severed as whilst there are ecological benefits, the dominance of ivy upon the tree structure was considered excessive potentially able to hamper phototropic activity in the near future. Specifications and remedial recommendations: Part One: Whilst time consuming, it is important that the ivy is removed. This could be carried out by two qualified tree climbers who would strip the ivy by hand. This may take a day, or more. We will then be able to complete our visual tree assessment. We do not require planning (notice of intent) from SODC to carry out these works. Part Two: The tree would benefit from re-pruning back to, or just able, existing pollard knuckles which will assist the request for improved light into the conservatory of the restaurant below and also the duty of care with reference to diners being present below the canopy underneath the glass roof. This will require a notification of intent and an application is being sent today. Please note the tree shold have a duty of care survey every 12 months. Remarks:

2 x Robinia The trees in question are 2 Robinias (pseudo-acacias). Over the 3 years I've lived at my property I've seen them decline. One is at least half dead, the other is at least one third dead. I'm worried that in a strong wind, large parts of either or both would fall and crash on to cars which park close by. John Sutton, who I consulted, advises removal. I wish to have them felled as 1. they are dying (a virus), 2. they were planted too close together 3. they are crowded out by my neighbour's overgrown walnut trees 4. they are a potential hazard.
