Awaiting decision Exeter 26/1311/CAT Works to Trees in a Conservation Area

Works: Trees

Still open. Anyone can comment while the consultation period runs, and comments go to the council rather than to us.

Proposal

The tree is a Cypress tree located at the front of 11 Devonshire place, to the right hand side when looking at the house. We would like to replace the tree with a native tree species - either a rowan or a cherry - in order to provide flowers for pollinators in the spring/summer and food for birds in the winter. We would like to do the removal in late (~Nov) 2026, well after the bird breeding season, in order to plant the new tree in early 2027 after the last frosts. The tree itself sits at the boundary of a conservation area.

The tree is a silver birch. We would like to carry out "crown reduction" reducing the height of the tree from ~10m to ~7m. Similarly, we would like to reduce the spread of the crown at the rear to reduce the amount of overhang with our rear neighbours. We will keep the left-right spread similar, only carrying out "crown thinning" in this respect to ensure the tree does not block too much light from our neighbours' gardens and our own.

T1- Fell one Contorted Willow to as near ground level as practicable and treat the stump with Eco-Plugs to prevent regrowth. Reason for works: The tree has outgrown its restricted location and is situated in very close proximity to surrounding residential buildings. Removal is proposed due to the limited space available for its continued development and long-term management. All works will be undertaken in accordance with BS 3998:2010 by DTG Trees & Grounds Ltd, an Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor.
