Hunters pub in Cockermouth is subject of a funeral directors conversion plan
An application has been submitted to turn Hunters on Main Street in Cockermouth from a pub into a funeral directors.
The proposal is recorded by Cumberland under reference FUL/2026/0118, with a received date of 8 September 2026. PlanIndex's copy of the council record showed it under consultation when checked on 14 September.
The pub has also been known as the Huntsman. CAMRA's entry, last surveyed in January 2024, lists that earlier name and describes a split-level room with a single bar and Saturday live music. That is a historical description, not a check of its current trading arrangements.
The new application seeks to replace the pub use with a funeral directors. Its registered description does not identify an operator or give a date for the proposed change.
A separate advertisement application at the same address, reference ADV/2026/0008 on PlanIndex, proposes two non-illuminated fascia signs to the front of the building and one sign on an existing illuminated hanging sign board. The Times & Star reported on 27 August 2026 that the signage application was made by Funeral Partners and that the proposed signs carry the branding of Eaves Funeral Service, a Whitehaven firm within that group. We have not read the signage drawings ourselves.
The council's supporting documents could not be independently checked for this report, so details of any internal conversion, staffing or service arrangements remain unverified. The application is a proposal, not confirmation that the pub use has ended or permission has been granted.

Methodology and limitations
Document-led local reporting using the public PlanIndex application record for the change of use and the related advertisement application. Direct council document access was unsuccessful; no claim of independent document verification is made. The applicant of the signage application and the branding it shows are attributed to the Times & Star's report of 27 August 2026. No decision-speed comparisons, production database rows or private exports are used. Queries record public GET retrievals.
- Application status can change after the check date.
- Applicant statements describe proposals, not completed works or guaranteed opening dates.
- No interviews or direct comments were obtained.
- The Times & Star reported the funeral home plan on 27 August 2026 from the signage application and listed FUL/2026/0118 on 13 September 2026. The article credits that report and claims no exclusivity.
- Funeral Partners as applicant and the Eaves Funeral Service branding come from the Times & Star's account of the signage drawings, which have not been read for this report.
- Direct council page retrieval returned a JavaScript shell without application detail. Reporting is limited to the public council records held on PlanIndex; supporting documents have not been independently verified.
- Historical background comes from an older public listing; it does not verify present trading, ownership, permission or occupancy.
