P26/S3837/TCA Decided
Castle Priory Thames Street Wallingford OX10 0HD
T1 Weeping Willow - Re-Pollard – Remove all secondary growth back to the previously established pollard points on the main scaffold limbs. G2 Crack Willow – Multi-stemmed tree comprising three primary stems - Re-Pollard – Remove all secondary growth back to the previously established pollard points on the main scaffold limbs. G3 Holly x2 - Fell to ground level in a safe and controlled manner. T4 London Plane - Pollard – Pollard the tree at a height of approximately 8 metres above ground level, making suitable finishing cuts to the primary and secondary scaffold limbs to establish a framework from which the tree can be managed as a pollard over the long term. Additionally, remove the two lowest secondary scaffold limbs back to the main stem to provide suitable clearance above the Yew archway. G5 Holly x2 - Fell to ground level in a safe and controlled manner. T7 English oak - Fell to ground level in a safe and controlled manner. Reasons for Works: T1 & G2 – The proposed works are in line with the previous management of these trees. The secondary regrowth has now established to a point where the likelihood of branch failure is increasing. The works are therefore recommended to maintain the trees within their established management cycle and reduce the likelihood of failure. G3 & G5 – These trees are in a state of decline and are heavily clad in Ivy, limiting their suitability for continued long-term retention. Removal is therefore recommended. T4 – This tree is situated centrally within a green archway formed by Yew trees on either side. The long-term management intention has been to allow the tree to establish before introducing it into a pollarding cycle. The proposed works will establish a suitable pollard framework, allowing the tree to be managed in this form over the long term while complementing its setting within the archway. T7 – The tree is situated on the roadside boundary and oversails both the public footway and carriageway. The tree is in a terminal state of decline, increasing the likelihood of branch or structural failure. Given its condition and proximity to frequently used targets, removal is recommended to manage the associated risk.

x4 stems of self set Sycamore and one dead stem - remove to ground level and plant a replacement hedge alongside the boundary with Wallingford Rowing Club. The trees are etiolated and ivy clad. Their removal will enable a new more robust, management hedge to be planted along this boundary which will be move compatible with the site and the adjacent mature specimen Plane tree (as they are currently growing into and conflicting with the crown of this marvellous tree). One additional dead stem would be removed.

Castle Priory, Thames Street, Wallingford, OX10 0HD
x6 stems of Lawson Cypress - remove to ground level and plant a replacement hedge alongside the boundary with Wallingford Rowing Club. The trees are etiolated and ivy clad and are the remains of an old lawson cypress hedge along here. They are very close to the stables and garage which is due to be renovated shortly and thus their removal will give clearance for scaffolding and enable a new more robust, management hedge to be planted along this boundary. Two of the stems are already dead.

T1 - Lawson Cypress T2 - Spruce T3 - Spruce T4 - Spruce T5 - Spruce T1 - Lawson Cypress, early mature, deceased, most probably due to anaerobic conditions through regular flooding. Fell. T2 - Spruce - mature, sparse poor canopy showing low vitality. Some suspected adaptive growth (ribs), percussive hammering indicated a possible central core of decay. Fell. T3 - Spruce, mature, sparse poor canopy would appear to be in decline. Fell. T4 - Spruce - mature, collapsed, missing Wallingford Bridge, brown rot present (cubical decay) having aided collapse. Fell. Notes of Spruces, T2, T3 T4: possibly not a traditional riparian species close to the river bank, the general stress potential issues related to structural integrity and a recent collapse, I propose T2, T3 and T4 are felled with the replacement of Alnu glutinosa Laciniata x 3 no. (10-12cm containerised trees) with aftercare to ensure establishment. T5 - Spruce - mature, no works, reinspect 2015, fair average vitality.
