Works: Trees
Permission granted. Work must normally begin within three years of the decision or the permission lapses.
Proposal
To fell x1 mature Fraxinus excelsior with high bat potential. The tree is a poor condition with multiple large cavities, it is located adjacent to a historic wall, although there is not much weight, the high levels of visible decay create concern that any failure will damage the listed wall. A bat survey is planned before any cutting takes places. Tree code: 28552 To fell a group of 3 semi mature sycamore and 1 horse chestnut that are extremely close to listed walls which require protection from tree roots to mitigate against foreseeable damage. Also 1 horse chestnut to reduce by 3m, from a 15m diameter crown spread to a 12m diameter, to avoid large limbs failing onto listed wall. Tree codes: 28504, 28512, 28516, 28524, 28532.

The tree is a London Plane - Tag Number G0034. 21 meters in height with a crown spread of 19 meters. Two significant lateral limbs failed during storm Darragh, the larger limb failed due to a small amount of included bark not visible from the ground, the weight of the branch then subsequently took out a the lower branch. There are two tears within the crown but with a significant amount (over 50%) of sound holding wood. Due to the crown now becoming more exposed we plan on completing a reduction of 5m over the whole crown, the tree will then be 16m tall with a spread of 14m. This is so that the overall character of the tree is not lost and a significant amount of sail will be reduced, therefore reducing the risk to potential future storm damage. We would intend to complete a crown reduction to maintain the tree size every 5 years.

The tree is identified on the Tree Location Plan and is a self-set ash Fraxinus excelsior. The tree is damaging the structure of the moorings, causing a trip hazard for access to the moorings from the ramp, and destabilising the surrounding structures. It is proposed to fell the tree and grind out the roots. The displaced stone flags will be lifted and reinstated to facilitate this work. It is not proposed to replant another tree in order to maintain safe level access to the moorings. Work to the tree has been defined in consultation with Historic Royal Palace's Park & Estate Manager, Nicholas Garbutt BSc (Hons); TechCert (ArborA); MArborA, and on the advice of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and Hockley & Dawson consulting engineers.

Barge Walk - To fell x3 semi mature Fraxinus excelsior trees on Barge walk, near Kingston Bridge. These trees are interfering with boat mooring areas and are starting to show ash dieback symptoms. 3 Prunus spp. will be planted as a replacement further south on Barge Walk. Tree tag numbers B0803, B0806, B0809 The Wilderness - To fell x2 Lawson Cypress and 1 Serbian spruce. One Lawson cypress is very close to a third party property and is declining health. The second Lawson cypress and Serbian spruce are subdominant to a Sequiadendron sempervirens specimen, that we would like to create room around. Some smaller shrub species, that can be easily maintained will be put in place of the Lawson and Serbian spruce. Tree tag numbers G0387, G0429, G0396 The Wilderness - To fell 1 mature Fagus sylvatica with Meripulus fungal fruiting bodies at the base. This tree is located adjacent to the Hampton Court Maze, a popular attraction for many school trips and families so there is significant risk associated with this stem. This tree will be replacement planted with a similar specimen to fill the large space that will be created, either Castanea sativa or Carpinus betulus. Tree Tag G0248. To fell 1 large dead Cedrus spp. on the east front within Hampton Court Palace Gardens. Replacement planting will take place to maintain a dappled screen to the palace. Tag number G0756.
