P18/S4917/TPO Granted
Nuthatch Grange, Checkendon, Oxfordshire, RG8 0SU
TPO is for group of 30 Oak or Ash at front of site. The trees needing work are 5 on the rear boundary of Rooks Nest, the neighbouring property, right at the edge of the TPO area. After seeking advice from ScottScape Tree Surgery due to safety concerns, it is now recommended that one tree should be felled. It is already decaying and has very few branches left so is now almost pole like andmoving hugely in the wind. The others needing attention need slight reduction and dead wooding in the crows as branches weak, dead and crossing causing weights concerns that are a danger. We have already added a new semi mature Oak to this area and will continue to addtrees to maintain the woodland area. The tree surgeon is at the property on Tuesday 13 March if the tree officer would like to met with him.

Lock Island, Whitchurch on Thames, Oxon, RG8 7DF
T1 - Grey Poplar T2 - Silver Birch T3 - Grey Poplar T4 - Sycamore T5 - Willow T6 - Willow T7 - Grey Poplar T8 - Swamp Cypress T9 - Ash T10 - Sycamore T11 - Willow T12 - Norway Maple T1 - A fully mature grey poplar with twin stems arising from 1m. The bark on either side of the union is bulging out a little but not by so much as to raise a serious concern. Given the maturity of this tree I do not think the twin stems will continue to grow and push against each other by very much. I recommend re-inspecting this tree in 5 years time. In the meantime the ivy should be cut back and the stem kept clean to allow future inspections to be uninhibited by this. T2 - A mature silver birch. This is a fine example of the species which appears to be in good health with no defects recorded. T3 - A mature grey poplar in good health with no defects recorded. Some minor deadwood present which is in a low risk area (south bank of the island). No works needed. T4 - A middle aged sycamore with a twin stem form that may develop as a weak point in the tree in future. The tree has a pronounced bias to the west with extensive surface/above ground roots towards the east. A low risk tree, but possibly one to consider removing in future before it fails anyway. T5 - A fully mature willow now showing signs of senescence. The upper crown has had a large piece split away and a large vertical stem close to the base of the tree has also broken out on the south side. This has left a large open wound with extensive basal decay. This tree will continue to break up and presents a medium low risk, with pieces likely to be swept away downstream. I recommend this tree is felled as a matter of moderate urgency. T6 - A fully mature willow with a twin stemmed form and a general bias to the north that overhangs the main river channel where boats would be waiting to enter the lock. The tree has been crown reduced in the past to alleviate the weight of the branches, with sprouting re-growth arising. I recommend the large upper branch overhanging the channel is reduced by around 30% as this is a medium risk to the river traffic. This should be done over the coming 6 months. T7 - A mature grey poplar with a multiple stemmed form. The tree appears to be in good health and shows normal vitality. Some minor deadwood present which presents a low risk. No works needed. T8 - A fully mature swamp cypress. The tree appears to be in good health and shows normal vitality, with moderate (natural) lean to the north. The small sycamore seedling growing at the base of the tree should be removed as it will only grow to compete with the cypress. T9 - An ash tree extenisvely decayed at the base with hollowing of the stem. The tree has been mostly cut down in the past, leaving a single remaining stem growing towards the east at risk of collapse. This would most likely fall in towards the island and become hung up in other trees, but should be felled anyway to avoid any unnecessary damage arising. The adjacent sycamore tree appears sound and growing normally. T10 - A mature sycamore with twin-stemmed form from the base forming more or less two separate trees. The two stems have developed a biased crown growing mainly to the west and south, but otherwise the tree appears to be in good health and shows normal vitality. T11 - A mature willow, smothered by ivy restricting views of the main stem. However, powdery frass observed at 1.5m where there is a suspect area of decay, with a bend in the stem just above this. There is a further wound consistent with a branch tearing out from the stem on the south side at 8m with 3 fungal brackets originating from the exposed wood. These appear to be of the pathogen Phellinus igniarius, although ivy did limit the inspection, so this may not be accurate. This is a strongly suspect tree in a high risk location and I recommend this tree is felled as a matter of some urgency (within the next 3 months). T12 - A mature Norway maple. Ivy covers the main stem limitin
