Cuckoo Wood Llandogo Road Llandogo Monmouthshire NP25 4TP
The forest block is part of the Welsh Government Woodland Estate and is managed by Natural Resources Wales (NRW). There are Phytopthora Ramorum (PR) infested Larch trees in the area and the upgrading and building of the forest track is needed to enable the felling and extraction of these trees. PR is a fungus-like organism that kills Larch trees. No cure has been found and there are no effective chemical treatments available therefore, the objective of any control approach must be to prevent or minimise any further spread of PR and the damage it causes. The best available scientific advice is to remove and kill the living plant tissue on which the organism depends for reproduction. In the case of infected Larch, this means affected trees should be felled or otherwise killed as quickly as possible after detection of the disease and before the next spring or autumn period of sporulation begins on the needles. The proposed harvesting track would enable NRW to access these infected larch crops to facilitate their removal. The proposed harvesting track will be used by forestry machinery and will be constructed from natural stone. The proposed track minimise any substantial ground damage caused by this machinery and ensures minor watercourses are not polluted through site runoff while operations take place.
