Works to tree protected by a TPO. T1 Holm Oak, Quercus ilex in rear garden - fell. After a number of fungi appeared on the tree in 2024 I had a Picus Test performed on the tree in October 2014 which identified decay on the interior of the tree and recommended significant pruning, which was carried out in February 2025. Unfortunately, a number of very large shaggy bracket fungi, Ionotus Hispidus have appeared on the trunk of the tree since then, raising my concern that the health of the tree was continuing to deteriorate. I had the tree assessed again by a qualified tree surgeon in January 2026 and since heavy branches have continued to fall from the tree, to protect the nearby houses and the Marks & Spencer car park to the rear of the garden they have recommended felling of the tree. The tree is 18 metres tall but only 12 metres from the house. I propose to replace the tree and would appreciate your advice on a replacement, bearing in mind the locations proximity to the building. I attach the 2024 Picus test results, the recent tree surgeon's report, a Sketch Plan and supporting photos of the fungi.

Works to tree protected by a TPO. It is a Holm Oak Tree, Quercus ilex in the rear garden of number 33 Hillfield Park, N10 3QT. After a report from a qualified tree surgeon, I submitted an application to remove the tree but this was rejected. The local authority tree expert reported that The Picus report shows a seam running through the trunk’s base surrounded with ample sound residue wood (as highlighted within the report). There are two large fruiting Ganoderma spp gonks at the base on the compression south side. There is also a smaller bracket approximately 1.5m up the trunk on the west side, and evidence of an old small bracket on the northside between the buttresses. Rather than remove, the Local Planning Authority (LPA) would allow lesser works to reduce further beyond the last most recent reduction points. A 10- 12ft crown reduction above the tree’s break would reduce the sail area, bring the canopy below the surrounding tree line, and allow for the tree to be retained.

T1 - Ash - Crown reduction by 3m in height bringing lateral growth to shape by 1.5m. Removal of all major dead wood, leaving the tree a standing height of 9m. Reducing the crown by approximately 3 meters in height and 1.5 meters laterally will help reduce overall crown weight and wind loading, while maintaining a balanced and proportionate crown.
