Proposal

Reference number 443, tree number 38. Works to carry out: Full Removal of Ash Justification for works: report from arborist states that the tree needs to be removed immediately due to high threat to property and medium threat to life. The tree stem has cracks, bark missing, insect boring, bark inclusion, co-dominance and is leaning. The crown is necrotic, has early leaf fall, die back, stag heading and branch crossing. The report states that there are several large Co-dominant stems with very heavy bark inclusion and collar decay. The bark has lesions and fissures on failing stems with heavy signs of insect burrowing. Because of the tree position and heavy competition the trees multiple stems have a heavy lean and some cases contorted due to phototropism. The crown is stag headed and has crown die back with several branches with wilting and dead scorched leaves. Several areas of die back have signs of epicormic growth as a result of failing limbs. It is the arborists opinion that the tree has ash dieback. High likelihood of stem failure leading to wind throw, medium likelihood of branch failure.

    G1 - Oak intertwined with Sycamore (northernmost group in the tree line) - Reduce the crown of the Oak tree by 30-40% (approximately 3 metres), and reshape to leave a balanced form. Topping cut of 6 inches diameter, and lateral pruning cuts of 4 inch. Remove the deadwood. Reduce the sycamore tree to balance with the Oak tree. Reasons - The Oak is suffering from dieback in the upper crown. It is inconclusive whether this is due to local conditions (ie lack of nutrients/exposed roots due to position on Devon bank), but a reduction in it's size may invigour the tree and promote new growth. The Sycamore is suppressed due to its proximity to other trees, and would be exposed to wind forces after pruning the Oak. So a reduction in size is also recommended. T2 - Sycamore (immediately adjacent and south in the tree line) - Reduce in height by 4 metres, and reshape to leave a balanced form. 4-5 inch topping cut, and 2-3 inch lateral pruning cuts. Reasons - Significant decay in the lower stem at 2-3 feet high. After hammer testing the area of decay, it is possible that approx 60% of decay could exist centrally. Therefore I would recommend a reduction in size to help reduce the risk of failure at the point of decay. Ginko Tree next to and damaging the ancient cob wall between 1 Long Acres and the properties in Wayland Avenue.     Oak tree on no mans land embankment which over looks garden of 18 Falkland Close, Exeter, EX4 5EZ. It has a large branch overhanging our garden. Tree surgeon Mitchell Tree Surgery has visited site and advised it needs to be removed. He says it is a large overhanging heavy limb which could cause considerable damage. Last year a large branch from a neighbouring oak next to It came down in a storm and caused damage. Our neighbours in number 18 and ourselves are concerned about this particular branch we wish to report to be removed. The tree itself has grown to 60 foot plus range and we all feel our houses are at risk. Sketch plan attached
