Awaiting decision Exeter 26/1061/TPO Works to Protected Trees (TPO)

Works: Trees

Still open. Anyone can comment while the consultation period runs, and comments go to the council rather than to us.

Proposal

T1- English Oak- Works Included * Crown reduce the mature oak tree by approximately 1-2 metres in height and lateral spread, maintaining a natural, balanced appearance. * Remove all dead, dying and broken branches throughout the canopy. * Crown lift the tree to approximately 5 metres (16 feet) above ground level. * All pruning to be carried out in accordance with BS3998:2010 - Tree Work Recommendations. The tree is located immediately adjacent to a primary school and a well-used pedestrian footpath. The proposed works are intended to manage the size and spread of the mature canopy, remove dead, dying or broken branches and provide appropriate clearance over surrounding areas, reducing the potential risk of branch failure affecting pupils, pedestrians or neighbouring property. The works represent proportionate arboricultural management of the tree and will be undertaken in accordance with BS3998-2010, retaining the trees natural form, amenity value and long-term health while managing its relationship with the surrounding area.

The process from here

This application is with Exeter for determination. The council publicises it, consults neighbours and technical bodies where required, and weighs the responses against local and national planning policy.

The statutory target is eight weeks for most applications and thirteen for major development, though extensions of time are common. Comments carry most weight while the case is undecided, so check the council portal for the deadline if you want to respond.

About trees applications

How this application type works

Tree applications cover work to protected trees: those under a tree preservation order need consent for pruning or felling, and trees in a conservation area need six weeks written notice before work starts. The council assesses the amenity value of the tree and can refuse consent, approve it with conditions, or in conservation areas make a preservation order in response.

    11 Devonshire Place Exeter EX4 6JA

The tree is a Cypress tree located at the front of 11 Devonshire place, to the right hand side when looking at the house. We would like to replace the tree with a native tree species - either a rowan or a cherry - in order to provide flowers for pollinators in the spring/summer and food for birds in the winter. We would like to do the removal in late (~Nov) 2026, well after the bird breeding season, in order to plant the new tree in early 2027 after the last frosts. The tree itself sits at the boundary of a conservation area.

    11 Devonshire Place Exeter EX4 6JA

The tree is a silver birch. We would like to carry out "crown reduction" reducing the height of the tree from ~10m to ~7m. Similarly, we would like to reduce the spread of the crown at the rear to reduce the amount of overhang with our rear neighbours. We will keep the left-right spread similar, only carrying out "crown thinning" in this respect to ensure the tree does not block too much light from our neighbours' gardens and our own.

We have removed what we can so far, but need approval to remove the rest, as they are around 5 inches at waist height. Plan to remove fully as no remedial value where they are located.
