Planning application

St Catherines New North Road Exeter Devon EX4 4AG

Granted Exeter 21/0957/CAT Works to Trees in a Conservation Area

Works: Trees

Permission granted. Work must normally begin within three years of the decision or the permission lapses.

Proposal

We would like to prune a tree very close to the boundary of our house, and overhanging the Harefield Close. The tree is also quite close to the property with the routes undergrowing and is now very large and spread very wide. We believe the tree is a beach tree.

The tree is a Cypress tree located at the front of 11 Devonshire place, to the right hand side when looking at the house. We would like to replace the tree with a native tree species - either a rowan or a cherry - in order to provide flowers for pollinators in the spring/summer and food for birds in the winter. We would like to do the removal in late (~Nov) 2026, well after the bird breeding season, in order to plant the new tree in early 2027 after the last frosts. The tree itself sits at the boundary of a conservation area.

The tree is a silver birch. We would like to carry out "crown reduction" reducing the height of the tree from ~10m to ~7m. Similarly, we would like to reduce the spread of the crown at the rear to reduce the amount of overhang with our rear neighbours. We will keep the left-right spread similar, only carrying out "crown thinning" in this respect to ensure the tree does not block too much light from our neighbours' gardens and our own.

Mixture of bay and cherry large shrubs to remove, which have become overgrown in the contained area next to the electricity sub station. We have removed what we can so far, but need approval to remove the rest, as they are around 5 inches at waist height. Plan to remove fully as no remedial value where they are located.
