Planning application

BH2025/02863

19 Sackville Gardens Hove BN3 4GJ

Granted Brighton and Hove Tree Works in Conservation Area

Proposal

Olive Tree - thin and prune for natural shape (front garden) Bay Trees - prune face back and reduce height for even level whilst retaining a screen of privacy Plum Tree - remove tree to ground level and stump grind - ( for new area to plant smaller shrubs and dog eats fallen fruit from tree ) Small Eucalyptus Tree - remove to ground level and stump grind Silver Birch Trees - lightly reduce and prune for natural shape Cherry Tree - remove to ground level and stump grind ( tree is too close to house and roots could potentially expand and ruin paving and the dog is eating fallen fruit from tree ) Olive Tree - prune and trim for natural shape Small Bay Tree - remove to ground level and stump grind ( remove for new planting area ) Small Apple Tree - remove to ground level and stump grind - ( remove for new planting area ) As part of a planned redesign of the garden, we are proposing the careful removal and selective pruning of several trees within the property. This work is intended to support the long-term health, safety, and usability of the space. Some of the existing trees are no longer suited to the new layout or are competing for light and resources, which has begun to affect their overall condition. Removing these trees at this stage will allow the garden to be reshaped responsibly, creating a healthier and more sustainable landscape in the future. Any pruning will be carried out sensitively, with the aim of improving structure, encouraging healthy regrowth, and preventing potential hazards. All work will be completed in a controlled and environmentally considerate manner, ensuring that the redesigned garden supports both aesthetic aims and long-term ecological wellbeing.

What a grant of permission means

The process from here

Permission has been granted, usually subject to conditions listed on the decision notice, some of which must be discharged before work starts. The decision notice on the council portal sets out exactly what was approved.

Work must normally begin within three years of the decision or the permission lapses. Neighbours cannot appeal a grant; challenging one means judicial review of how the decision was made, within tight time limits.

About trees applications

How this application type works

Tree applications cover work to protected trees: those under a tree preservation order need consent for pruning or felling, and trees in a conservation area need six weeks written notice before work starts. The council assesses the amenity value of the tree and can refuse consent, approve it with conditions, or in conservation areas make a preservation order in response.

I wish to fell the bay laurel tree in the north-east corner of my garden as it is not an appropriate species for a garden of this size, is damaging the adjacent brick wall and shading parts of my garden as well as that of my neighbours at number 73. I have discussed this application with them and they would have no objection to the removal of the tree.

T1 Sycamore- remove 3 epicormic stems at the base of the tree (approx diameter 10 cms each) Reduce central top height of the tree by 2 meters and reshape the crown all around. Reasons- the tree has not been worked on for some time and it is cutting out light at the back of the property and for other properties in the vicinity. It is a very tall tree for the confined space that it is in.
