Failing timber retaining wall adjacent to shared vehicular access to be replaced with new steel and timber retaining wall. No signs of tree roots pushing behind existing wall. Failure believed to be due to rotten timbers rather than presence of tree roots or ground movement. All trees identified within attached report - sever any tree roots up to 50mm in diameter within 500mm of existing retaining wall in order to accommodate replacement retaining wall and reduce likelihood of future impact and failure of replacement retaining wall. Tree roots are not expected to be found, but application submitted prior to works being carried out so as to prevent delays should roots be found.

Northern boundary: Along the northern boundary is principally a line of field maple Acer campestre. One tree at the west end is windthrown. The remaining trees have been tip reduced on the north side leading to a canopy being weighted towards the south into the site. These remaining trees also have overlong branches weighted to the south. Access at the base of the trees is limited by vegetation and material. Recommendation: Field maples: Tip reduce the field maples to a horizontal radial branch length of 7m. Remove deadwood more than 25mm diameter. Crown lift to 5m. Remove epicormic growth from base to 3m. Clear vegetation and material at the base of the trees to allow future survey. Southern boundary: Dead birch on the southern boundary. Outgrown line of conifer. Self-set buddleia and willow. Both species are rapid growing and invasive. Area of grass. Recommendation: Remove birch. Reduce height of conifer hedge to c6m. Remove self-set trees and shrubs less than 300mm diameter at the base and treat stumps to prevent regrowth.
