About trees applications

How this application type works

Tree applications cover work to protected trees: those under a tree preservation order need consent for pruning or felling, and trees in a conservation area need six weeks written notice before work starts. The council assesses the amenity value of the tree and can refuse consent, approve it with conditions, or in conservation areas make a preservation order in response.

T2 Ash Tree: Crown reduction by up to 3 metres, returning the canopy to the previous pruning points. Justification: The tree has grown very large for the space, crown to be reduced to maintain the tree at an appropriate size, reduce end weight on the lateral limbs, and manage its relationship with surrounding properties. The proposed works are sympathetic, following the existing pruning framework and retaining the tree's natural form.

T1 Fruit Tree (Prunus): Fell to ground level Justification: The tree is in a poor structural condition, exhibiting extensive decay and is significantly leaning towards the neighbouring boundary. Due to its deteriorated condition and increased risk of failure, retention is no longer considered appropriate. Removal is recommended on safety grounds. T3 Ash Tree: Crown reduction by up to 3 metres, returning the canopy to the previous pruning points. Justification: To reduce the overall size of the crown by returning it to the previous reduction points and removing a dead branch. This will reduce end weight and minimising the risk of branch failure, while maintaining the tree's long-term health and amenity value.

T1 Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) Proposed Works: Reduce the crown by approximately 3???4 metres, pruning back to the previous pollard points to establish a cyclical pollarding regime. Remove any dead, damaged or weakly attached branches encountered during the works and reshape the crown to maintain a balanced framework, all in accordance with BS3998:2010 ??? Tree Work ??? Recommendations. Arboricultural Justification The Ash has been previously pollarded and has now produced substantial regrowth beyond the previous pruning points. The tree has become disproportionately large for its confined location, resulting in excessive shading to neighbouring properties and gardens whilst increasing the mechanical loading on the historic pollard unions. Returning the tree to the previous pollard points represents appropriate cyclical management and is consistent with its established pruning history. The reduction will reduce end weight acting upon the pollard heads, lessen the likelihood of branch failure, and maintain the tree at a size more appropriate for its surroundings. The proposed works will also significantly improve natural light penetration to neighbouring properties whilst preserving the tree's amenity value and extending its safe useful life through continued pollard management. The works are considered reasonable, proportionate and represent good arboricultural practice.
