Decided Vale of White Horse P13/V2861/TCA Works to trees in CA

Works: Trees

Decided. The decision notice on the council portal carries the outcome in full, including any conditions.

Proposal

T1 - Ash T2 - Yew T3 - Yew The trees have been assessed by Mr Richard Upton, a qualified, Oxford tree surgeon known to the Council. The wording used herewith is mine, written as a lay person, quoting his opinion. A copy is being sent to Mr Upton who would undertake the work, if approved. T1 - This Ash drops branches, though is healthy, but is now threatening due to its long limbs which are so close to the house; the tree towers over the house, and also shades the house. (See Photos A & B). Richard Upton put forward the various possible solutions, and said that the crown reduction method would be the best option for the future of this tree; this should leave a well-proportioned tree. Crown thinning would leave long, spindly limbs. Considerable reduction is needed (20 feet is estimated, but the photos may suggest modifying this (photos C and D). T2 & 3 - These Yew trees have intermingling branches, with trunks 2 metres apart, while lie each side of a path (photo E). The trees are now very dominant, and cut out light in the house, and are smothering surrounding trees. Mr Upton thinks that the best approach here would be to reduce the size by partial reduction, within the category of crown reduction. An arch would be formed using the two trees. The main trunks would not be affected, and a shortening of 6 to 8 feet would occur. Remarks:

The single dead Cherry tree is shown as "C" in a red circle on the Sketchmap provided. For reasons of safety before autumn storms, the crown now needs to be reduced by removal of the lateral branches to a residual limb length of c. 1 metre above main unions, creating a branched monolith (of about 4-5m height) . This is a wildlife-friendly alternative to complete removal. The trunk already has ivy growth, and the tree will continue to provide potential harbourage for wood-boring insects, other invertebrates, birds and smal mammals. Arborists have indicated that the standing dead tree should remain stable for several years as a monolith. Stability will be checked annually. The lopped branches will be cut into manageable pieces to make a habitat pile in a designated area of the churchyard. N.B. There is no Tree Preservation Order in force for this tree or any other tree in the chuchyard.
