Works: Trees
Decided. The decision notice on the council portal carries the outcome in full, including any conditions.
Proposal
Pruning of x1 Victoria Plum tree and removal of another. Each year there is an excess of plums from these two large trees. We will plant two/three new fruit trees to replace the plum that is removed. Pruning of x2 Bramley apple trees, x1 Cox apple tree, x2 pear trees, x1 Mulberry tree (continuation of work started in 2010). Removal of a very large, leaning sycamore tree located at rear of property, which over-shadows orchard trees and spoils fruit. Removal of this tree will increase light to the orchard area and create planting possibilities for new fruit trees. Removal of several dead tree trunks which pose a safety risk.

Yew Hedge Leylandii Hedge Removal of Yew hedge on left hand drive entry marked on plans 2 and 3 as hedge A. This Yew hedge cuts out a lot of light and is now unsightly including a lot of dead wood and the canopy interferes with a specimen box on the other side of the drive and 2 holly trees. Most of the 23 Yews forming the hedge are below 75mm wide at 1.5m from ground level with only 5 approaching 100mm wide. We propose to install estate railings (similar to ha ha and plant low level evergreen shrub (to be agreed but possibly photinia to a height of 1.5m. Removal of 5 large leylandii planted as a hedge on southern boundary marked on plans 2 and 3 as hedge B. Present retention of remainder of hedge running along ha ha until Didcot Power Station demolished and then possible removal to open up views across paddock. This hedge was originally planted as screening but is now completely out of control and blocks out a huge amount of light behind part of the hedge interferes with the canopy of what we believe to be an Ash. We believe that their removal will benefit the land that time forgot and allow us to move forward with our plans to recultivate this area. Remarks:

The single dead Cherry tree is shown as "C" in a red circle on the Sketchmap provided. For reasons of safety before autumn storms, the crown now needs to be reduced by removal of the lateral branches to a residual limb length of c. 1 metre above main unions, creating a branched monolith (of about 4-5m height) . This is a wildlife-friendly alternative to complete removal. The trunk already has ivy growth, and the tree will continue to provide potential harbourage for wood-boring insects, other invertebrates, birds and smal mammals. Arborists have indicated that the standing dead tree should remain stable for several years as a monolith. Stability will be checked annually. The lopped branches will be cut into manageable pieces to make a habitat pile in a designated area of the churchyard. N.B. There is no Tree Preservation Order in force for this tree or any other tree in the chuchyard.
