Walnut Tree 14 Lawson Conifer trees Removal of diseased Walnut tree in rear garden Permission is sought to remove a diseased Walnut Tree and to reduce the height of a Lawson Conifer hedge. The Walnut is the smaller of a pair of mature walnut trees in the garden to the rear of the property. The tree has advanced rot (see photographs) including a significant patch of rot on the largest banch in the centre of the crown, and two deep holes nearer the base of the tree which fill with water and black fungus in wet weather. There are also signs of wood boring insect activity in both holes, and pieces of rotton wood inside. A signficant amount of dead wood has fallen from the tree in recent months and the applicant has been advised that the tree is now in a dangerous state. It is proposed that the tree is removed entirely due to the advanced state of rot within the crown and trunk. Waste will be chipped on site, with suitable wood retained for logs by the applicant. Trunk to be ground out. The applicant does not propose to replace the walnut tree with the same species as the larger walnut specimen is healthy and will be retained. However we intend to plant a mature willow tree in a similar location when ground conditions permit. Reduction in height of a row of 14 x Lawson Conifer trees to 4m The row of 14 Lawson conifer trees form part of the boundary with neighbouring property Humfreys and are excessively tall, depriving both gardens of light. The applicant proposes to reduce the trees in height to approximately 4m, as indicated by the dotted line in Fig.9. This would maintain both the appearance of the boundary and the health of the trees. The applicant has discussed this with the neighbours at Humfreys and they are in agreement with the proposal. Height of each tree reduced as above to form a lower hedge. Waste chipped on site. Remarks:

T1 - Lime T2 - Lime T1 is a Lime, 23.5m in ht & with a breast height dia. of approx 1200mm. It is growing against the boundary wall, which has partially collapsed. There is a dense basal growth around the stem making inspection of the base adjacent to the wall impossible. T1 is growing as a pair with T2. It is a mature tree in good condition. The tree contains an awkward 4-way fork at 18m, which is a point of potential structural weakness. There is minor die back at branch extremities & a number of larger dead branches within the crown. There is a dead branch, with a diameter of approx 125mm located over the shed. There is extensive epicormic growth and the crown is congested. T2 is a Lime, 26m in ht & with a breast height dia. of approx 1000mm. The tree is growing as a pair with T1, sharing an overall crown shape. The tree has a reasonable crown structure, but with dense epicormic growth & congested crown. Both trees are in reasonable condition, although they have reached maturity & there is minor die-back beginning at branch extremities. The trees are growing as a pair, with an overlapping crown shape. They are important trees in the landscape. They should be treated in the same way to maintain the overall crown shape. There is a risk of dead wood falling from both trees, & a possibility of branches breaking out of the crown of T1 from the awkward fork noted above. Lime responded well to crown reduction & there is ample branch growth in the crowns of these trees to maintain good crown shape if reduced. It is recommended that the crowns of both trees should be reduced by 20%, with any dead, dying or broken branches being removed. Basal growth around the base of T1 and epicormic growth from both trees should also be removed. This work will reduce the risk of branches being shed and reduce die-back at branch extremities. To make trees safe over the building site and school. Developer is offering to have the work carried out as he wants it to be done even though they belong to the school. Remarks:

    1. Trees on roadside beside the lodge at entrance to school. Raise to 5m over road and or cut back from road. Remove major deadwood over road. Mixed species including oak, elm and yew. Hazard to road and road users. 2. Beech (Tag No. 2057) tree is in decline with large dead limb over churchyard. Reduce dead limb by approximately 4m to leave a 1-2m stump thus reducing damage of failure over church yard. Leaving stump will slow rot spread to main stem and allow wildlife habitat. This work should allow tree to be retained for a longer period of time. 3. Scots Pine (Tag No. 2217) has a dysfunctional union at 15m seen from above when working on 2216 beside it. Branch failure likely. Remove dysfunctional limb and reduce remaining canopy by 20% 0.5m to help balance crown. To stop limb failure. 4. Oak. located in big woods near the workshop and log store. The tree forks at 3m and has old inonotus hispidus fruiting bodies on the N limb. The S limb has woodpecker hores, an indication of internal dysfunction. The tree is in overall decline. Fell. Given the trees condition and the regular use of the area by school staff the tree should be removed. 5. Oak. located in big woods on the sports field side, near the water jump. The tree is in decline and has recently lost a large limb over the sports field at 3m. Fell. Given the trees location by the sports field and its overall condition this tree should be removed. The school has a TPO over the entire site. A tree survey was carried out at the school on some of the trees in May 2008 and a VTA program was initiated in Feb 2013. Since the survey regular tree work has been carried out as indicated by the survey along with tree maintenance. The school is now looking to be proactive with its trees hence the VTA program which has now been initiated. There is also a tree planting program with several plantations having been planted on the site containing 4000 trees.
