What a grant of permission means

The process from here

Permission has been granted, usually subject to conditions listed on the decision notice, some of which must be discharged before work starts. The decision notice on the council portal sets out exactly what was approved.

Work must normally begin within three years of the decision or the permission lapses. Neighbours cannot appeal a grant; challenging one means judicial review of how the decision was made, within tight time limits.

About householder applications

How this application type works

Householder applications cover work to an existing house and its garden: extensions, loft and garage conversions, porches, outbuildings and similar alterations within the boundary of the home. They cannot be used to create a separate dwelling or change what the building is used for. Councils aim to decide them within eight weeks, and immediate neighbours are usually notified and given a chance to comment.

This silverbirch sits at the left hand side of the front of the house between us and Mr and Mrs Ashman at 77. The branches grow and overhang the pavement as well as our drive. Over time they obstruct pedestians as well as making it dangerous for us to have a clearview when trying to leave the drive in our cars. Mr and Mrs Ashman and I share the cost of any work needed and our tree surgeon usually notifies you but he has now retired. Therefore we need permission to reduce the lower branches and the crown (pollarding i think it is called). We have already had a quote from a tree surgeon, but await your approval. HAR/CA26, TPO 45W.
