Proposal
Beech tree in front garden of 14 Hooley Range, Crown reduction to previous pruning points, secondary branches only. Branches are overhanging our drive: we do now have a problem in particular with pigeon droppings on parked cars on our drive. The tree is also excessively shading our front rooms as well as causing issues with our neighbours TV signal. The tree under application is an Ash (Fraxinus excelsior), designated as T70 on the Stockport Council TPO/Conservation Area mapping system. The resident initially requested an assessment for full tree removal following two distinct structural failures: one instance where a failing limb nearly caused personal injury, and a separate incident resulting in property damage to a private vehicle parked on the driveway. 2. Arboricultural Assessment A ground-level visual inspection of T70 was conducted on 22/5/2026. The tree currently exhibits good physiological health, particularly when contextualized against the regional prevalence of Ash Dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) and symptoms appear limited to a potential Stage 1 infection. The inspection revealed no structural defects at the base, with an absence of basal cavities or fungal fruiting bodies. 3. Proposed Works and Justification While the resident favors removal to mitigate risk, complete removal is disproportionate given the tree?s current vitality and high amenity value within the Heaton Moor Conservation Area. To mitigate the risk of ongoing limb shedding while preserving the tree, it is proposed to crown reduce/pollard the specimen by 30% to 40%. The reduction will significantly decrease wind-loading, reduce leverage on individual branches, and safely retain the tree within its urban setting. 4. Replacement Planting The resident hasn't provided definitive instructions regarding a replacement tree. However, following discussions, they are environmentally conscious and receptive to the idea of replanting a suitable replacement, should the council deem it a necessary condition of the permitted works. So, to the rear boundary fence line, growing on the property of *Fern Cliff 18 Mauldeth rd SK4 3NG we have a mixed group of nuisance self seeded trees, pushing at the fence, dipping leaf little and bird poo, and blocking all the light. A mix of small to medium self seeded T1 to T9, Ash, Sycamore and Holly to remove to ground and treat base. Directly behind we have T10 and 11, a larger Ash and Pine which will be reduced by approximately 3 metres and shaped.
