    P25/S3878/TPO Submitted 4 Dec 2025 89m away

Horse Chestnut (T7) - Take down to leave a standing trunk for wildlife habitat. Reasons for proposed surgery: - The tree has established, significant bacterial canker which has been present for at least ten years, as well as leaf miner that adversely affects the tree's ability to withstand the canker (as its photosynthetic capability is severely compromised). This condition is steadily worsening, evidenced by staining of the bark and exudation becoming more prevalent every year. - The tree is bifurcated, which is concerning due to its proximity to the owners' house, neighbouring properties and a well-used public footpath. It is evident that should any significant part of the canopy fail, the owners and others will be adversely affected or indeed injured. This seems highly likely, not least due to its declining condition and exposure to the prevailing south-westerly wind and the increasing frequency of storms. - The entire garden is dominated by the tree. This means the owners' children are at risk whenever they play in the garden, since branches may fail at any time. - The tree was only originally protected to limit overdevelopment of the site (i.e. onto Cow Hill behind) which was achieved, and not because this tree has any significant public amenity value, nor is it rare or of historical importance. The owners are extremely willing to replant. Suggested replacement species: Liquidambar styraciflua 'Worplesdon'. This tree is ideally suited to the soil type of the site, has attractive foliage and resplendent autumn colour, and will attain a similar height at maturity to the tree being removed.
