Proposal
We bought this property (Magnolia House) in 2004 as a new build, one of two new houses on a former single site (Stonor Hayes). On our plot, three trees were subject to TPO's - two mature Ash (T1 & T2) and one Aspen (T4). When we first visited the property in January 2004 as prospective buyers, there was no aspen tree, but a newly planted sapling tulip tree at position T4. (See Photo 1). As we subsequently went through the process of purchasing Magnolia House, we queried what happened to the aspen. We were told by the developers that the aspen disappeared during the build and was replaced with the tulip tree sapling. At the time we were surprised that the native aspen had been replaced with a non-native ornamental species, but obviously this was all done by the previous owner - the property developer. We quickly discovered that the tulip tree is an extremely vigorous species, and after only 12 years the sapling has transformed into a very large tree with a trunk diameter of 30 cm (50 cm above ground level). This species is clearly too big for our garden and too close to our house. The tulip tree also has a very close dense canopy which creates a severe amount of shade in the garden. An arborist has advised us that our tree is "still a baby" and could grow to 30 m in height with a 12-15 metre spread. After discussion with our arborist, our proposal is to fell this Tulip tree and replace it with an oak tree (Quercus robur) approximately 3 metres away from the tulip tree site - further back from the house. Our reason for choosing oak is that it is a native species which provides an excellent wildlife habitat. It is also slower growing and casts a more dappled shade.
