Planning application

1 Church Lane, Lewknor, Watlington, Oxon, OX49 5TP

Decided South Oxfordshire P15/S4725/TCA Works to trees in CA

Works: Trees

Decided. The decision notice on the council portal carries the outcome in full, including any conditions.

Proposal

T1 - Sycamore Gp 2 - Sycamore T3 - Ash T4 - Horse Chestnut T5 - Sycamore T6 - Ash T7 - ? T8 - Ash T1 - Sycamore, crown lift to 5 metres over the drive and tip reduce spread over the drive above this point by 1 metre only. Gp 2 - Sycamore (5 main stems and 1 small/minor stem). Prune the growth over the cottage roof to lift and reduce spread to provide 4 metres clearance from the roof. T3 - Ash, selectively reduce the crown to reduce lateral spread towards the cottage and over the summerhouse by around 2 metres. T4 - Horse Chestnut, crown reduce by 25% to reduce the height and spread of the tree by 25%. T5 - Sycamore, selectively reduce certain branches to reduce the crown spread by 2 metres. T6 - Ash, crown reduce the whole tree by 25% to reduce the height and spread by around 2 metres. T7 - Reduce the lateral crown spread by around 2 metres. T8 - Ash, crown reduce the whole tree by 35% to reduce height by around 3.5 metres and the spread by around 2.5 metres. All of the above works are to retain these trees in good condition and their high aesthetic value in the garden but with considerably more light to the property. The pruning will remove a lot of unwanted direct overhang to the cottage roof and car parking area. The pruning will also reduce radial crown spread such that pockets of sky will be visible between the trees as viewed from the cottage and garden area close to the cottage. Remarks:

T1 Ash - Reduce the height of the secondary scaffold limbs forming the upper crown by up to 2 metres. Reduce the overextended lateral branches by up to 3 metres to alleviate end-weight and reduce wind loading, whilst maintaining a balanced and natural crown form. T2 Silver Birch - Reduce the height and spread of the tree by up to 1.5 metre, approximately back to the previous pruning points. Reasons for works - T1 is a mature tree with extensive basal hollowing and evidence of a previous primary limb failure, resulting in an unbalanced crown and associated decay within the main stem. The proposed reduction is intended to alleviate end-weight, reduce loading on the remaining structure, and aid in the long-term retention of the tree. T2 forms part of a routine maintenance programme and is proposed in accordance with the previous management regime to maintain the tree at an appropriate size and condition.

There are two trees in the front garden Permission is requested to fell both trees. Tree 1 = Weeping Birch Tree Tree 2 = Maple Tree Weeping Birch (Tree 1) This has become too large for the site, the roots are lifting the paving around it, making it a trip hazard. Roots have also entered the nearby drains, causing problems. Permission is sought to fell the tree, to make safe access to the property and to make space on the driveway for off street parking. (There is a nearby primary school, and parking can be a challenge.) Maple (Tree 2) This tree has also become too big for its location, which is very close to the boundary of No. 5 and No. 7 Vicarage Rd, causing lifting of the paving around it. It is also very close to both houses. Permission is sought to fell this tree.
