Proposal
T1 - Sycamore 5 Firs Crown reduction on over expansive and neglected Sycamore. Removal of inappropriate Firs planted in 1980's. Please refer to attached explanation sheets and with site visit by Joe Smith, tree officer, SODC. The works are within large private and non-public view gardens and grounds and the subject of major works, upgrade and re-planting. At the front entrance of the house are 5 Firs, planted approx 25 years ago and inappropriate to their habitat. They over dominate. They have been left to grow, without any maintenance or management, in keeping with the other trees within the gardens. They are ugly and impact negatively on Blewburton Hall. In addition they take significant moisture from the ground and this has resulted in ground heave and has undermined the mid 19 century Victorian wall that needs repairing. Significant planting will replace these Firs and be sited where originally the flower bed was located at the base of the retaining wall. In various cases these Firs have overgrown and impact on the canopies of more important specimens such as Yews which need to be retained and allowed to grow to their rightful scale. The top section of the wall which can be seen in one of the photographs will be rebuilt in old stock matching bricks and a natural stone coping stone laid to protect the bricks. Natural non invasive climbing plants will be planted. This will result in a softer and more appropriate country planting scheme befitting of the halls entrance and more in keeping with the surroundings. This forms part of a wider tree husbandry and significant replanting scheme across the 5 acres of gardens, all left to neglect for a number of decades. The Sycamore impacts and dominates the main entrance to the house. It is attractive and a pleasing backdrop but again needs to be reduced in crown size by 4 metres to allow for a better crown shape and balance. Certain Sycamore trees are especially in need of removal. There is only some 3 inches remaining of the trunk that has not rotted away at the base and this represents a danger to the main entrance and neighbours. 2 other trees were lost last winter in the driveway. This is a priority before the autumn winds. Over planting of trees at the entrance to the main house in the past have caused canopy conflict and stunted growth and strength of some trees. Remarks:

T1 - Copper Beech - Reduce branches by approximately 2 metres focusing mainly on lateral branches rather than the top. Lift canopy to provide statutory clearance over the road and clear from service cables. T2 - Tulip Tree - Reduce by approximately 3 metres to restore balance within the crown due to previous limb failure leaving the tree unbalanced. T3 - Horse Chestnut - Reduce by approximately 3 to 4 metres, leaving a natural flowing crown outline and remove major deadwood. T4 - To fell and remove 1 x Yew tree and install eco plugs to prevent re-growth.

Ash (T2 of TPO 09/2019) - Reduce back crown over single storey block D4 by a maximum of 4m at its widest point (work mainly relates to over extended limbs over roof). Reduce back low branches over the roof to create 3m clearance. Cutback branches from front of the adjacent building (D6) to create 2-3m clearance. To help balance the crown, reduce remaining crown by approx. 2m. To avoid altering the balance of the tree as a whole, the crown of the tree should be reduced in proportion to its original shape. All pruning cuts must be made at branch junctions, leaving sufficient live growth to maintain or enhance crown form.
