Planning application

Holy Trinity Church, Church Lane, Henley on Thames, Oxon

Decided South Oxfordshire P14/S4205/TCA Works to trees in CA

Works: Trees

Decided. The decision notice on the council portal carries the outcome in full, including any conditions.

Proposal

T6 - Beech T7 - Walnut T12 - Yew T14 - Sycamore T16 - Holm Oak T20 - European Lime T21 - European Lime T22 - Hornbeam T6 - Beech, small secondary branches low over Church Lane, lightly prune the small and secondary branches on the NE and E sides to ensure 3.5m height clearance over Church Lane. T7 - Walnut, small secondary branches growing to within 1m of the guttering of 35 Church Lane. The main fork at 1.8m is tensile in shape, but exhibits included bark, common for this species and not too significant at this time. Lightly tip reduce the eastern half of the crown to ensure a minimum of 2m clearance from 35 Church Lane; and crown clean (incorporating a 10% thin). Also prune to ensure 3.5m height clearance over Church Lane. T12 - Yew - Side branches on the NW side growing over and suppressing adjacent Irish Yew. Lightly tip reduce the small lateral branches on the NW side by 1.5m to allow adjacent Irish Yew to develop unhindered. T14 - Sycamore - Four stems from tight compression forks near ground level; exhibiting included bark unions. Stems are upright and of good vitality. Secondary lateral branches are now growing to within 0.5m of the church roof tiles.Crown reduce by a max of 2.5m off the overall height and by a max of 1.5m off the overall lateral spread. T16 - Holm Oak - Poor shaped and unbalanced crown, growing close to church and better qualit oak (T15). Previous pruning includes hacking back the side branches in the lower and mid crown on the north side; leaving unsightly stubs. This tree will suppress oak (T15). Option 1 - section fell to ground level and trat stump to prevent re-growth. T20 - European Lime - Old pollard with established knuckles at 6m. Re-growth poles now 10-12cm diameter and 8-9m long. Epicormic growth at base. Re-pollard just above the established pollard knuckles, leaving 10cm stubs. T21 - European Lime - Lapsed pollard with original knuckles at 7m; resulting stems now 20-25cm diameter and 12-13m long. Areas of dysfunctional wood around the old knuckles especially on the south side. Reduce the overall height by no more than 3m, and the overall lateral spread by no more than 1m. Crown clean (incorporating a thin of 10%). T22 - Hornbeam - Previously reduced at 7m long ago. Dense but well formed broad spreading crown has now established. Re-growth is 5-12cma diameter and 6-8m long. Crown clean (incorporating a 10% thin) and lightly reduce the lateral spread by no more than 1.5m (best achieved by use of pole-pruners from ground). T1 - Copper Beech - Reduce branches by approximately 2 metres focusing mainly on lateral branches rather than the top. Lift canopy to provide statutory clearance over the road and clear from service cables. T2 - Tulip Tree - Reduce by approximately 3 metres to restore balance within the crown due to previous limb failure leaving the tree unbalanced. T3 - Horse Chestnut - Reduce by approximately 3 to 4 metres, leaving a natural flowing crown outline and remove major deadwood. T4 - To fell and remove 1 x Yew tree and install eco plugs to prevent re-growth.

T1 Copper Beech. Low canopy over road and footpath. To raise canopy to statutory clearances, (5.2m over road, 2.5m over footpath). To remove deadwood greater than 60mm over road and footpath, for safety purposes, minimising any chance for larger falling deadwood in windy conditions.

Ash (T2 of TPO 09/2019) - Reduce back crown over single storey block D4 by a maximum of 4m at its widest point (work mainly relates to over extended limbs over roof). Reduce back low branches over the roof to create 3m clearance. Cutback branches from front of the adjacent building (D6) to create 2-3m clearance. To help balance the crown, reduce remaining crown by approx. 2m. To avoid altering the balance of the tree as a whole, the crown of the tree should be reduced in proportion to its original shape. All pruning cuts must be made at branch junctions, leaving sufficient live growth to maintain or enhance crown form.
