Tree T1 is a mature Common Beech (Fagus sylvatica) located within the rear garden of a residential property and subject to Tree Preservation Order protection. The tree is situated in close proximity to the dwelling, conservatory, boundary fencing and neighbouring properties. As a result of its mature size and extensive crown spread, the canopy now extends over adjacent structures and has become intertwined with a neighbouring oak tree. The proposed works consist of a crown reduction of approximately 25–30% to reduce overall crown dimensions and end-weight on extended limbs, whilst retaining the tree’s natural form and significant amenity value. The objectives of the proposed works are: • To provide appropriate clearance from nearby structures and garden features. • To reduce mechanical loading and leverage on extended scaffold limbs. • To minimise branch interaction and competition with the neighbouring oak canopy. • To maintain the tree at a suitable size for its location and reduce the need for more severe pruning in the future. • To retain the tree as a prominent landscape feature whilst undertaking proportionate management. The proposed reduction will be undertaken in accordance with BS3998:2010 Tree Work – Recommendations, pruning back to suitable growth points to maintain a balanced and natural crown form. No works are proposed to the main stem or principal structural framework beyond that necessary to achieve the specified reduction. The tree is considered to make a positive contribution to local amenity and the proposed works represent routine arboricultural management intended to ensure its long-term retention within the landscape.

The weight of the tree is also now on the side of The Old Vicarage and if any further limbs fall off, there is a risk of serious damage to the house and to anyone thats inside it. In order to save the tree, we would like to reduce the whole canopy by one third. The tree is approximately 30m high and we would like to reduce the whole crown to 20m above ground level. This would rebalance the tree and hopefully prevent any further damage. The garden is sometimes open to the public and I am a full time gardener that often has to work under and around this tree, therefore we need to make it safe as a matter of urgency. We have had advice from a tree surgeon and these are the measures he suggested.
