Planning application

Belmont Abbey Monastery, Vaughan Building Ruckhall Lane Belmont Hereford Herefordshire HR2 9RP

Withdrawn Herefordshire, County of P241891/J Works to trees covered by TPO

Works: Trees

Withdrawn before a decision, so it carries no planning weight. A revised scheme can be submitted at any time.

Proposal

Removal of one very tall cedar immediately by the patients' entrance to Vaughan Building. The tree is now more than twice the height of thebuilding. There is no evidence yet of it is damaging the building nor the subsurface infrastructure but as there are necessary water main works and new electric grid connections planned in the near vicinity for later this year and we fear that these works could interfere with the cedar's roots and thus lead to destabilising it. Once the trenching work is complete, we will replant, probably with a cherry tree.

T1. English Oak (Quercus robur). This tree is causing concern to the residents of Woodfield gardens as it drops dead branches frequently and more recently has shed a reasonably large branch that landed in the entrance of the parking area. This area and the pavement beneath the canopy of this tree has a high frequency of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, a large proportion of which are elderly. The tree has lots of indications of stress and die-back with dead wood present on the tips of almost every limb.

Atlas Cedar - the tree is positioned in the area of more recent graves and has a high target occupancy. Due to historic limb failures the trees crown is out of balance with large limbs overextended, reduce the overextended limbs by removing 2-3 metres of growth to a suitable growth point, remove major deadwood and limbs with hazard prone characteristics, thin canopy by approximately 10% to reduce sailarea and minimise risk of future limb loss.
