Proposal
Request to trim a sycamore tree at 52 Wolseley Road, N8 8RP. You have approved a request from Forbes Tree Care to reduce it by 4 metres. We've asked Forbes to reapply for consent to trim the tree by an additional 4 metres. The tree is on the boundary and significantly overhangs our property at 12 Glasslyn Road, N8 8RH. It is closer to our house than to that of the owners. Their garden is much longer. The tree is excessively high in relation to our property. We are concerned that should any part fall, it will land on our property. The ground slopes downhill, the balance and weight of the branches indicate it would fall in our direction. It would certainly reach the house and cause extensive damage. Our neighbour’s garden was recently damaged by a branch falling from an adjacent tree. You have approved the reduction of that tree to 3 metres. The tree was last trimmed in October 2017, and had not been trimmed for many years previously. Reduction of 4 metres would still mean the tree is much taller than it was in 2017, and significantly higher than historically. Its height and density means our garden is in shade for most of the day, even in summer, and almost a complete lack of sunlight all year, though the garden is South facing. Falling detritus means that we cannot use the top of our garden for leisure purposes. A suggestion that the tree is part of the ancient woodland of Queens Woods is not the case, it is about 60 years old. I have lived in this house for 66 years and remember when the tree was a sapling. To summarise, the tree is too high in proximity to neighbouring property; the height and density is intimidating; we are very concerned about its safety; we are deprived of light; we are denied reasonable enjoyment of our garden. We welcome a visit from Haringey staff to assess the site and request you approve Forbes' resubmission to trim the tree by at least 8 metres.

The tree in question is a smoke bush, which has been left to get tall and leggy. That’s causing the tree to lean, it also has a fungus which looks like honey fungus or white bracket fungus. It’s has a split in the main trunk and sounds hollow when tapped. There are 2 options for the work to be carried out. Option one reduce tree by 25% and remove limb that is really leaning and try and get to grow more evenly. Options 2 fell the tree and remove stump and roots.

The proposal is to remove a small wild cherry tree (prunus avium) that is growing in the front garden, next to the gate. The reason for removal is that the tree is competing with a larger Magnolia tree, which is the main feature of the front garden. Having spoken with tree surgeons, we are of the view that there is not sufficient space to accommodate both trees, and that reducing or reshaping the tree is unlikely to result in an attractive and healthy-looking tree. It is also close to the garden wall so is likely to cause damage to the wall as it grows larger. The tree would be replaced by a range of planting, including roses, evergreen shrubs, and climbing plants along the wall.

Ginkgo (T1) - fell. Reason: this is a female tree, that drops fruit all over the nursery playground. The children try to eat them, it gets into their clothes, shoes, hands, and all over the class room, creating an extremely unpleasant environment for the children and staff. Replant with another deciduous tree with similar potential size canopy (eg. Norway maple) Sycamore (T2) - Reduce the height of the tree by 4m. Reduce lateral branches in line with this (up to 2.5m). Reason: There is some decay at the base of the tree on the east side, spanning 40% of the circumference of the tree. The bark is flaking from ground level up to 1.5m, and use of the sounding mallet indicates the dysfunctional wood extends at least to the same height. The tree has a full crown, but has had selective branch length reductions in the past. The crown overhangs the nursery playground and neighbouring parking area. Lime x2 (T10 & T11) - Crown raise to 4m, removing epicormic growth. Reason: to remove the branches that touch the shelter to prevent damage.
