REAR OF GROTES BUILDINGS & LINDSEY HOUSE, LINDSEY HOUSE, LLOYD'S PLACE, LONDON, SE3 0QF

REAR (land rear of 3-5 Grotes Buildings adj John Ball Sch): ONE Ash (T1)(ht.30-35m) FELL to safe monolith. Reason: health & safety, the ash is on a raised bank just outside the school north boundary, overhanging the school playground. 2 large branches failed on Monday 4 July 2022 with one falling onto the school playground during the school day, previous branches have fallen over past 6 weeks. During arborist climb to carry out remedial works to jagged wound wood, a hidden main stem decay cavity with small opening was discovered with only 100mm holding wood in places. The decay cavity is beneath a primary stem supporting 50% of canopy. Removal of the primary stem above the decay cavity and all overhanging branches will leave an exposed tree with unsustainable and unmanageable crown branch structure. Risk management is to reduce to a safe standing monolith, all cut timber to be retained lying on site for biodiversity. Duty to replace applies. Informative A: the sensitive management of the ash tree to a safe monolith for rear amenity, urban greening, wellbeing, wildlife, environment and retention of all cut timber on site to mitigate the biodiversity emergency is greatly appreciated. Informative B - Duty to replace: Tree Preservation Orders and trees in conservation areas, guidance, para 121 'the landowner has a duty to plant another tree of an appropriate size and species at the same place as soon as he or she reasonable can if a tree in a conservation area is removed because it is dead or presents an immediate risk of serious harm.' https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tree-preservation-orders-and-trees-in-conservation-areas Informative C: please plant a large canopy replacement tree such as: small leaved lime, oak, Robinia, sycamore, wild cherry, field maple, whitebeam, wild service tree, hornbeam, Indian horse chestnut, Tulip tree, wingnut, Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata), Japanese pagoda tree, aspen, sweet chestnut, hop hornbeam, under the duty to replace and to maintain the urban forest canopy as required by The London Plan 2021 for 10% uplift of London's tree canopy by 2050.
