See the lofts, dormers and extensions before the scaffolding goes up

Most of your best jobs pass through the planning register before they reach any roof: loft conversions with dormers, hip-to-gable rebuilds, two-storey extensions, changes of roofline on conversions. The description on an application usually names the roof work outright: "loft conversion with rear dormer", "raising of ridge height", "single storey extension with flat roof". Reading a week of applications for your area tells you exactly which houses will need a roofer in the next few months and what for, before the main contractor has been chosen.
